Out of Touch, Out of Time - Chapter Nineteen

July 7, 2008

Jonas spent his time while Cheyenne worked on her photographs going through everything he could think of to look for on what she’d called the internet. Once he got over his initial amazement at all that information available on this one little machine, he’d made good use of it.

There was nothing even looking though the local paper that would explain what could happen in the future. But how could it? How could he find an answer for something that wouldn’t happen for three days, if then? How he wished he could travel forward though time just once more; he was sure the answer would be available on July 11, 2008. But that wasn’t going to happen, unfortunately, he was pretty sure of it and he was stuck in this time looking for answers to a question that hadn’t even been formed yet. How was that for a conundrum?

His search ultimately led him to the attic where Cheyenne had found some of the old stuff left from Hucksinger’s family. It turned out that sometime after he left, old Robert P. and Lydia finally talked with each other long enough to produce a son. A fact that made Jonas shake his head and smile at the mere thought of Lydia Hucksinger, Lady of the Manor, ever doing anything that common. Had old Robert P. spiked her tea with his favorite brandy?

Too bad, that would have been one occurrence at the Hucksingers’ table he would have like to see the start of. But only the start, the thought of being privy to anything else made him shudder. As Cheyenne would have said, “That’s one picture I’ll be haunted by for the rest of my life.”

He smiled as he thought of the beautiful Cheyenne. She did not make him shudder, but he would surely be haunted by her for the rest of his life.

Which reminded him of just exactly why he was standing in this dusty attic in the middle of a warm afternoon to look though the discarded leavings of the Hucksinger family.

It was not a family destined to continue, however. The line had finally died out with the eternally single and childless last and only grandchild. But before she passed on, she’d spent the last fifty years of her life neglecting the house, only repairing or replacing what had to be done in order for her to have a home and a roof over her head. She died in 2003 and the city auctioned the house off with all its furnishings still intact.

Suddenly, his nose tickled and he sneezed. He looked around the crowded attic and wondered what he thought he was going to find up here that would answer his questions. But if it wasn’t up here, he didn’t know where he was going to find the answer.

He sat on a steamer trunk that he’d more than once carried out to Mrs. Hucksinger’s carriage when she was taking a trip out west to visit her sister. Now it was cracked and stained with age. Did it still contain the clothes she carried with her on her annual trip?

Finally, he took a good look around, and for the first time, he was truly struck by the reality of it all. The desk from Hucksinger’s study that the attorney had sat behind with such authority was now stuffed into a corner, piled with a hundred years of discarded belongings and dust.

Had the Hucksingers ever thrown anything away? He didn’t think so. Here his world sat, old, torn, and dirty. Papers and pictures yellow and brittle with age. A dress he recognized as Lydia Hucksinger’s favorite hanging on a form near the window had been subjected to too much sun and dust. The velvet faded and torn. If he touched it, would it disintegrate? Turn to dust just like everything thing he’d ever known?

His family, his friends. Had his sisters left descendants? Could he find them? Should he even try?

Suddenly it hit him, he’d spent so many days just trying to adjust, take in all the new that he hadn’t had time for the old. Now, here it was laid out in front of him and he couldn’t ignore it anymore.

Everything he knew was gone, and he’d never felt so terribly alone in the world. Not even when his wife and son died had he felt this alone. Then he had the strength and support of his parents, his sisters and their families.

There was no one left who knew and understood his life. Suddenly, he had a burning desire to find their graves. He needed to feel connected to something solid, tangible even if it were death.

What a shock it would be to discover your present in someone else's past. I do hope he opens some of that stuff and takes a look. Maybe there is a clue he is missing.

Seeing reality sink in for Jonas was so sad. He really did look forlorn.

Love how you managed all that clutter! And it all looked so dusty and old!

That was a nice chapter.

Hey I was wondering, where did you get all the luggage used in this chapter?

Lachesis said...

Gayl, You knew this was coming. :D At some point Jonas had to really see what he's left behind.

Funny, I was telling my husband after I put it up, I should have added Photoshop dust. Glad it still looks dusty. I stacked stuff using SilentLucidity's OMSP's, makes for a real cluttered look. I've been collecting stuff for a while that I hoped would fit in the attic.

Ash,
Thank you, and welcome.

I'm not usually very good at remembering where I got something, but this time you're in luck. :D The luggage is the cargo collection at Garden of Shadow, done by lalabubus. It's in the Antiques and Oddities, Figments of the Imagination section. Except for the flowered ones, they're from Around the Sims 2, part of her mystic room.

Hey Ash,

I noticed the blue plaid is also from Around the Sims 2, part of her Advent Calendar. :D

I love all that clutter too, really made it realistic!

I agree, seeing Jonas like this was really sad. It all hit him at once.

Chuckled at the comment about the wife ever doing something that common. :D

Great chapter!

I am in awe of the storyline and your writing, just such a joy to read. It flows so well!
Wonderful shots and descriptions of the dusty clutter in the attic, and the stark realization that everyone he knew no longer exists.
Really photoshopped dust was not needed, you conveyed everything in your writing!
Sounds like you talk to your hubby about your stories like I do! LOL!

And Jonas' need to reach out, to connect somehow, those last couple of shots were heartbreaking.
Jonas is an engaging character, and I look forward to following his adventures further!
Just a wonderful update Lachesis!!

Stunning emotion. Jonas has been so enthralled with Cheyenne and so engrossed in fitting into modern life that it seems it never really hit him. Everyone he ever knew is long gone.

I'm hoping (maybe I shouldn't) that he goes through all the FABULOUS old clutter and finds the answer to his question. It should be in the past as well as the present.

Your attic set is wonderful! It does look neglected, haphazardly thrown together in piles, dusty and old.

Oh, boy. I was wondering when this was going to happen. Poor Jonas! It's not easy going through what he's been through. I'm curious as to what will happen next...

Being surrounded by relics of the current past and his former present certainly won't help matters any.

I really liked the detail in the writing here, the little personal touches. You could tell he was attached to the people that left the stuff behind, that he knew them.

First, Emily, Drew, S.B., Mao,
Thank you all so very much. This update is one of my favorites. I feel so much for Jonas, realization can be very painful. I actually enjoyed writing it.

Emily,
That clutter is a pain, and it was the second time in recent days I've done a cluttered room. My next simfic50 update has a very cluttered library. Glad it worked, though. :D

I see Lydia as the most stuffed shirt, she was probably like bedding a broom. :D

Drew,
Thank you, I was hoping the writing would make you think the room was dusty. Dust motes coming through the window would have been cool, though. LOL

Yes, my poor hubby gets to listen to my Sims babbling all the time. I used to plot with him, but now he doesn't want to know because he reads the updates, too. He does proofread for me, though. :D

S.B.
The attic coming on the heels of Mark can't be too easy for Jonas. Unfortunately, he won't have time to go through the clutter, he's about to be interrupted. :D

Mao,
You knew it had to happen sooner or later. Reality always bites us in the butt eventually. He'd grown up in that house in a way. The Hucksingers were very much a fixture in his life, and people are never careful what they say around servants.

This update was very well done! Jonas had been handling things a little too well. At some point the enormity of the situation had to strike him. Seeing all the old furnishings and clothing, which would have been new and immaculate the last time he saw them, was a wonderful way to bring this about. Well done!

Lachesis said...

Thank you so very much Saoz, fellow romance writer! ;D

I've always been afraid Jonas was too accepting, but sometimes we're too busy trying to keep up to have time to realize what we've lost.

Poor Jonas he was just seeking answers, not to be hit in the face with all his pain and loss.

Wonderful chapter...
but you know what...

the link for chapter 19 in your chapter link sent me to chapter 20....

so I ended up reading chapter 20 first than this chapter....
anyway I thought I might let you know so you can fix it... :D lol
I never pay attention to the tittles, lol I go directly to the actions and if someone else is like me, then they will be linked directly to chapter 20 when they click the "chapter 19" link! :P

wonderful chapter and poor Jonas, he is finally realizing he is indeed all alone and he might even be more lonely if he goes back to his past... for there he wont have the beautiful Cheyenne by his side!!!

What an incredible story line you have in here!!
Great job!

Lachesis said...

OMG, Sandy, Thank you so much for letting me know, I've fixed it. Sorry, those were two chapters that it was bad to get out of order. I need to pay attention to how much I select.

But I'm really confused because when I clicked at chap 20 to get back to 19 to be sure it worked ok, I got a link that said, ...blogger/Shit. I *know* I didn't do that. Something weird's going on here. I've also fixed that.

Thank you so much, again, I hope reading backwards didn't spoil this chapter too much. :p

To have that hit him all in one go, it would crush anyone. But I think it was bound to happen. Still ... poor Jonas.

Lachesis said...

Yes, he just had to stop long enough and really look around him for it to become apparent things had changed forever.

And it was bound to happen, sooner or later.
